Japandi wall art
Japandi mixes Scandinavian simplicity with Japanese calm: low furniture, natural wood, linen, clay and very little clutter. The art has to follow the same rules. It should be quiet, textured and made with care, and one good piece is better than five.

Utagawa Hiroshige
Maples at Mama, ca. 1857

That is why we chose Hiroshige's Sudden Shower and Maples at Mama for this page. Both have large areas of calm colour, natural tones of wood, water and leaves, and a human scale that feels at home in a lived-in room. Printed on matte fine art paper, they have no shine to break the soft look of a japandi space.
Hang a single 50×70 cm print slightly off-centre above a low bench or sideboard, or place it on a shelf leaning against the wall. In an oak or white frame, it will look like it has always been there.
Questions
What colors work in a japandi room?
Warm whites, sand, clay, sage, charcoal and natural wood. Accents of rust or indigo, like those in Hiroshige's prints, add depth without breaking the calm.
Can I use abstract art in a japandi room?
Yes, if the palette is soft and the composition has space in it. Keep bold, busy works for other rooms.
