About the work

Suhara (from the series Sixty-Nine Stations of the Kisokaido) is a color woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, dated 1835 or 1836. It belongs to the series Sixty-Nine Stations of the Kisokaido. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese woodblock print. His landscapes show weather, light and everyday places along the roads and rivers of Japan, and their bold cropping and flat colour later inspired Van Gogh, Monet and Whistler. The original is in the collection of Cleveland Museum of Art.
