Terracotta and orange wall art

Terracotta and burnt orange have become the warm neutrals of the moment: earthy enough to go with wood and linen, strong enough to give a room character. Art in the same family of colours makes them look deliberate.

Hilma af Klint painted her Youth paintings in The Ten Largest on a glowing orange ground, with pink, blue and yellow forms on top. Hiroshige's Maples at Mama frames a distant temple with rust-red autumn leaves. Together they cover the range from bright orange to deep clay.

On a white or cream wall, an orange print brings warmth on its own. On a terracotta wall, choose a print with plenty of contrast, such as the blues and pinks in af Klint's Youth paintings, and use a white mount so the edge stays crisp.

Questions

What colours go with terracotta?

Cream, sage green, dusty pink, ochre and deep blue. Many of these appear in Hilma af Klint's Youth paintings, which is why they suit terracotta rooms.

Is orange wall art too loud for a bedroom?

Not if the rest of the room is calm. One large orange print above the bed, with neutral bedding, feels warm rather than loud.
