About the work
Sudden Shower over Shin-Ohashi Bridge and Atake (1857) is one of the best-known images from Utagawa Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. Travellers hurry across a wooden bridge as dark rain slants over the Sumida River, drawn in hundreds of fine lines. Vincent van Gogh admired it so much that he painted his own copy in 1887. Its blues, greys and warm wood tones make it one of the easiest Japanese prints to live with: quiet enough for a bedroom, strong enough for a living room. Our print is made from a high-resolution scan of an impression in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
