About the work
Hotohoto Festival at Izumo Grand Shrine is a color woodblock print, ink and color on paper by Utagawa Hiroshige, dated 1853. It belongs to the series Views of Famous Places in the Sixty-odd Provinces. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese woodblock print. His landscapes show weather, light and everyday places along the roads and rivers of Japan, and their bold cropping and flat colour later inspired Van Gogh, Monet and Whistler. The original is in the collection of Cleveland Museum of Art.
