About the work
Cherry Blossom Viewing at the Temple on Mt. Suribachi is a watercolor on paper by Utagawa Hiroshige, dated after 1850. It belongs to the series Picture Book of the Souvenirs of Edo. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese woodblock print. His landscapes show weather, light and everyday places along the roads and rivers of Japan, and their bold cropping and flat colour later inspired Van Gogh, Monet and Whistler. The original is in the collection of Cleveland Museum of Art.
