About the work
Maples at Mama (1857) looks through a veil of red autumn leaves towards a temple and open fields, a composition Hiroshige used again and again in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo: a close foreground that frames a distant view. The rust-red maples and pale sky make it a natural fit for terracotta, cream and wood interiors, and for the calm, natural look people call japandi.
