About the work

Nissaka: The Night-Weeping Stone at Sayo no Nakayama is a color woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, dated c. 1848–50. It belongs to the series The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese woodblock print. His landscapes show weather, light and everyday places along the roads and rivers of Japan, and their bold cropping and flat colour later inspired Van Gogh, Monet and Whistler. The original is in the collection of Cleveland Museum of Art.
