About the work
In 1907 Hilma af Klint painted ten canvases over three metres tall in about two months, a cycle she called The Ten Largest, following a human life from childhood to old age. No. 3 belongs to Youth: spirals, petals and circles drift across a warm orange ground, in pinks, blues and soft yellows. Af Klint kept the series out of public view, and it was not shown widely until decades after her death. Today it reads as some of the earliest abstract painting in Europe, and one of the most joyful. As a print, the orange ground carries a room on its own and sits especially well against sage, cream and terracotta walls.
