About the work
No. 4 is the second Youth painting in Hilma af Klint's The Ten Largest (1907). Large pink and blue forms bloom like flowers over the same orange ground as No. 3, with small spirals and letters scattered between them. Hung side by side, No. 3 and No. 4 make a natural pair above a sofa or a bed: the same palette, two different rhythms. Af Klint painted the series in tempera on paper at a scale few painters of her time attempted; the print keeps the whole composition, edge to edge, in the proportions she chose.
