About the work

Act VII is a color woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro, dated 1794–95. It belongs to the series The Storehouse of Loyal Retainers as Portrayed by Famous Beauties in Twelve Leaves. Kitagawa Utamaro (c. 1753–1806) was a master of the Japanese woodblock print, best known for his portraits of women. He framed faces close up, with fine lines and soft colour, and his prints were collected in Europe from the 1860s on. The original is in the collection of Cleveland Museum of Art.
