About the work
Fireworks at Ryogoku (1858) closes the summer of Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. A single rocket bursts over the night river while boats crowd beneath the long bridge, all in deep indigo and soft grey. It is a small, dark, atmospheric image that glows against pale walls and works beautifully in a pair with Sudden Shower, rain and fireworks, day and night, both over Edo's bridges.
