About the work
Scattered Pine Trees by the Tone River is a color woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, dated 1919. It belongs to the series The Road to Narita in Shimosa Province. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese woodblock print. His landscapes show weather, light and everyday places along the roads and rivers of Japan, and their bold cropping and flat colour later inspired Van Gogh, Monet and Whistler. The original is in the collection of Cleveland Museum of Art.
