About the work

Courtesan Dreaming of a Marriage Procession is a work by Kitagawa Utamaro, dated late 1790s. Kitagawa Utamaro (c. 1753–1806) was a master of the Japanese woodblock print, best known for his portraits of women. He framed faces close up, with fine lines and soft colour, and his prints were collected in Europe from the 1860s on.
