About the work
Night Rain at the Azuma Shrine is a color woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, dated mid-1830s. It belongs to the series Eight Views of the Environs of Edo. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese woodblock print. His landscapes show weather, light and everyday places along the roads and rivers of Japan, and their bold cropping and flat colour later inspired Van Gogh, Monet and Whistler. The original is in the collection of Cleveland Museum of Art.
