About the work
Mary Cassatt painted The Boating Party during a winter in Antibes on the French Riviera, in 1893–94. A man rows a woman and a small child across deep blue water, the yellow boat and pale sail cutting bold shapes across the canvas. Cassatt, an American who worked in Paris and exhibited with the Impressionists, borrowed the flat colour and unusual viewpoints of Japanese prints, and you can feel it here. Bright and full of air, it works like a window in a dark hallway or a room with little daylight. The original is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
